Under R2, four-wheel or all-wheel-drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels may qualify for the installation exception, but must still carry traction devices. R3 requires devices on every vehicle without exceptions. Towing and larger vehicles have additional requirements. Follow roadside signs and Caltrans or CHP directions even if they differ from an earlier report. Pull completely out of the traffic lane before installing chains.
