Other transportation must risk the person's health, and the trip must be to an appropriate medical facility. Coverage normally reaches the nearest suitable facility able to provide the required care. After the Part B deductible, the usual share is twenty percent of the Medicare-approved amount. Air transport requires conditions such as a need for rapid movement that ground transport cannot provide; personal preference is insufficient. Never delay emergency help to compare bills. Some non-emergency transport qualifies with a provider's written medical-necessity order, but not every appointment trip does. When the company expects Medicare may refuse a particular non-emergency service, it must provide an Advance Beneficiary Notice. Repeated scheduled trips can involve prior authorization too. Ask the care team and transport company before scheduling, retain notices, and call 1-800-633-4227 with coverage questions. A doctor's order alone does not guarantee payment.
