Trained volunteers work individually or with small groups on reading, writing and basic mathematics. Goals can include health information, forms, online job applications or smartphone use rather than classroom tests alone. The official learner criteria require adults eighteen and older who are not in high school or a degree-granting program, can speak and understand English, and can meet for two hours weekly. People needing beginning English or other courses should ask about suitable referrals instead of assuming every language level fits this service. Call or text 408-615-2956, or email readsantaclara@santaclaraca.gov, for the next orientation. The checked page still lists July and August in-person and Zoom dates; these are past sessions, not newly advertised events.
