It does not mean abandoning medical treatment for every unrelated condition. A prognosis of six months or less is not an automatic six-month coverage cutoff. Eligible patients can continue after recertification. Benefit periods consist of two ninety-day periods followed by sixty-day periods. The chosen hospice team must provide or arrange care related to the terminal illness, so check before obtaining separate services that might leave you responsible for the bill. Approved hospice services generally cost nothing, but outpatient symptom-management prescriptions can involve copayments of up to five dollars each, and inpatient respite care can involve cost sharing. Ordinary room and board are not universally covered. Unrelated treatment retains its applicable charges.
