English
Navigation, messages and food: reduce distracting tasks before driving

Distracted driving is broader than holding a phone. NHTSA includes messaging, eating, drinking, talking with passengers and operating navigation or audio equipment when these divert attention. Keeping a phone untouched does not by itself establish full attention to the road.

Set the route, volume and necessary arrangements before leaving. If a change, message or food needs attention, find a safe and lawful place to stop instead of completing the task while moving. Passengers can assist without presenting screens to the driver or demanding an immediate response. Parents and experienced drivers should demonstrate the behavior they expect from younger motorists.

States set different rules, age restrictions and penalties for phone use and other distractions. Check the jurisdiction where you will drive. This is not a nationwide fine schedule, and hands-free equipment is not a guarantee of risk-free use. Reduce tasks that draw eyes, hands or attention away so decisions about actual traffic remain the priority throughout the journey.
