Children may approach from the curb or cross in front. NHTSA explains that flashing yellow lights mean the bus is preparing to collect or unload pupils, so drivers should slow down and prepare to stop. Flashing red lights and an extended stop arm indicate boarding or unloading. Stop and wait for the red lights to cease, the arm to retract and the bus to move before checking the surroundings and proceeding.
